Arcadia

Arcadia

Arcadia

was a pop group which was formed in 1985 and only recorded one album. The group was formed by Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes, and Roger Taylor from the group Doran Doran. Roger was only in a few of the groupís photographs and claimed to be involved only in the recording aspect of the group. The group got the name of the band from a painting by Nicolas Poussin which was titled Et in Arcadia or also known as, The Arcadian Shepherds.

The only album recorded by the group was called, So red the Rose, and it received platinum status. The album reached number 23 on the U. S. Album chart. From it came the Top 40 singles, Election Day, The Flame, The Promise, and Goodbye Is Forever. The All Music Guide says this album was the best one that Duran Duran ever made. Others who had a part in the recording and making of the album were David Gilmore, from Pink Floyd, Carlos Alomar, Herbie hancock (pianist), Sting (provided the back vocals on the song, The Promise). Grace Jones provided spoken-word segments in the songs, The Flame, and Election Day. Mark Egan (bass guitar player) was from the Par Metheny Group. David Van Tieghem (percussionist) was from New York. The band did record a single called, Say the Word, for the movie, Playing For keeps, soundtrack.

Arcadia continued the same image that Duran Duran had with their slick image, tasteful fashions, and hair-dos. The band was always changing their style and Rhodes, Le Bon, and Taylor were clad in the upbeat gothic look which included black tuxedos, vintage formal wear, and bow ties. They also dyed their hair black when they performed in Philadelphia at the Live Aid Concert in 1985. Arcadia also did a variety of promotional gigs on television. They did not ever tour the country and they split up in 1986 when Duran Duran re-grouped with Le Bon, Rhodes, and bass player, John Taylor. The group(Duran Duran) recorded their next album, Notorious. Roger Taylor, the drummer of the group, retired from the music business and this lasted for 15 years. He re-joined the original Duran Duran group in 2001.

Duran Duran is a well known musical group but not many will remember the Arcadia group unless they followed the groups during 1985 and 1986. Their one and only album, So red the Rose was their only album and they had only 5 singles. Although the group was very short lived, they left a Record hit album and singles, so they will be remembered by some. Duran Duran fans will probably remember them most.
