followed the Go Goís in the early 1980's. They were one of the independent all girl bands of the era. The band was formed in 1981, in L:os Angeles and was named The Supersonic Bangs. Later the name was shortened to just Bangs. The band was a part of the Paisley underground scene in Los Angeles. This consisted of groups that played a combination of different music styles of the sixties, and was influenced by folk rock and jangle pop with a modern punk garage undertone. The band was forced to change their name when a band called Bangs in New jersey threatened to sue them. So the group named their band The Bangles. The members of The Bangles were Susanna Hoffs (singer and guitar player), Vicki Peterson (singer and guitar player), Debbi Peterson (drums and singer, and Annette Zilinskas ( bass player and singer). The group recorded at least one single as the Bangs before they made their debut album as The bangles. The album was self titled, The bangles, and was released on the Faulty Products label. Their manager was Miles Copeland . Annette left the band and was replaced by Michael Steele. The bandís full length debut album was called, All Over the Place and it was released on the Columbia label in 1984. The album featured the singles, Hero Takes a Fall, and Going Down To Liverpool. The latter also had a music video for it and it which starred Leonard Nemoy and it was a big hit.

Prince wrote Manic Monday for the group and the song became a huge hit. It reached number 2 in the United States, Germany, and the U. K..Their album, Different Light, in 1986 also became a big hit, especially because of the single number one hit, Walk Like An Egyptian. There was a lot of friction among the members but they still had another number 2 hit, Hazy Shade of Winter which was a cover of Simon and Garfunkelís and was from the soundtrack of the movie Less Than Zero. Their song, If She Knew What She Wants was a hit which reached the Top 20 in Germany.

In 1988, their album, Everything, was a big hit and went multi platinum. The album contained their biggest hit single of all and it was called, Eternal Flame. The single became a worldwide number 1 hit. The group split up shortly after this and went their separate ways to work on solo careers. The group re-formed in 2000so they could tour. On August, 2007, the band released their first official, live DVD called, Return of Bangleonia - Live in Concert. Together the band released 6 albums, 22 singles, and 5 DVDs and Films.
