Bobby McFerrinwas born in Madeley, United Kingdom, on March 11, 1950. Bobby is an a capella vocal performer and conductor who was born in the U. K. But was raised in New York. He is the son of the well known baritone operatic singer, Robert McFerrin. Bobbyís most popular song that many can remember is, Donít Worry, Be happy. The song was a number 1 pop hit in the United States, in 1988. It was played in the movie, Cocktail, which starred Tom Cruise. The song also won a Grammy Award for Best Song of the Year. Bobby can make his own music by tapping on his chest while singing and creating a bass and drum sound. His voice is unique in that he can sing in a range of four octaves.
Bobby sang the tune to the Bill Cosby Show in 1987 and also did the music for a Cadburys chocolate commercial. He performed the music for the Pixar movie, Knick Knack. Billy sang the theme song for the movie, The Son of the Pink Panther in 1993. Bobby was appointed as the creative chair of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, in 1994. He also makes tours as a guest conductor for symphony orchestras in the United States and Canada. Bobby combines serious concert pieces with his own style by doing vocal improvisations and has the audience participate with him. The concerts sometimes end with him conducting the orchestra in an a capella rendition of the William Tell Overture. In this case, the orchestra members sing their musical parts instead of using their musical instruments.
