Elton John was born in Pinner, Middlesex and had a very restrictive childhood. His wild stage costumes and performances were his way of letting go and being himself. He felt more at home on stage than in a bank which was the direction that his father tried to steer him. Elton John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. He involved himself in the fight against AIDS since the 1980's. He was knighted as Sir Elton Hercules John in 1998. At the age of 15 he began to pursue his career in the music industry. Both of Eltonís parents were musically inclined. His father played the trumpet with a semi professional band which played for military dances. His parents bought many records by Elvis Presley, Bill Haley and the Comets, and other rock and roll singers and Elton became hooked on the style of music.

Elton John started playing the piano when he was only three years old. He picked up music by ear at the age of four. Not long after that he began performing at parties and family gatherings. At the age of seven he began taking piano lessons and at the age of 11, he won a junior scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. At the age of 15 he began playing at a nearby pub. He played on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. In 1964 Elton and his friends formed the group called Bluesology. They toured with American soul and rock and roll bands.

In 1977 Elton announced that he was retiring from performing. He still produced one album a year and in 1979 he became the first western pop star to perform in the Soviet Union and also the first in Israel. In the 1980's Elton married Renate Blauel which surprised many people because they believed that Elton was gay. The marriage lasted only four years because Elton claimed to be bisexual and in time, he finally admitted to being a homosexual after all.
