George Harrisonwas best known as the lead guitarist of the musical group, The Beatles. George was born on February 25, 1943 and died on November 29, 2001.He was born in Liverpool England into a Roman Catholic family who had deep roots in Ireland. He had his own film production company called Handmade Films, and he was a producer. George was also a very spiritual and religious person. George’s first musical group was, The rebels, which included George, his brother Peter, and a friend named Arthur Kelly. In 1954 George met Paul McCartney and was introduced to John Lennon. He was asked to join the band (then known as Quarrymen, later Silver Beetles) and George’s dad helped them get bookings in social clubs in their area. In 1960, they became The Beatles.George was the lead singer for all of the songs that he wrote for the beatles and also lead singer for some of the others. The beatles split up in 1970. Harroson released many albums, some solo and some with other groups. George was the only Beatle to write an autobiography. It was called, I Me, Mine.
The Beatles consisted of George Harrison, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and Ringo Starr. The group was formed in Liverpool, England and became one of the top musical groups of all times. They brought about a new type of rock and roll music which was very upbeat and it was just the type of music that the teens enjoyed in the 1960' and 1970's. John and Paul were the two main songwriters although George also wrote and sometimes sang lead on one or two songs on each album. After the Beatles broke up, George was the first one ro release a number one song, My Sweet Lord (1970). George was also known as a his record producer. George had a very successful solo career and had hits such as, What is Life (1971, Give Me Love Give me Peace On Earth (1973), All Those Years Ago (1981), and Got My Mind Set On You (1987). His best selling album, All Things Must Pass was his triple album and holds the distinction of being the best selling album by any Beatle singing solo. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame in 2004 as a solo artist.
George Harrison had been diagnosed with cancer and by 2001 it had recurred and in spite of aggressive treatment, it was soon diagnosed as terminal. George died in Hollywood mansion on November 29, 2001. He was 58 years old. He had been diagnosed with lung cancer and it had spread to his brain. He was cremated and his ashes were scattered over the Ganges River as he had requested.
