Lionel Richie

was born on June 20, 1949, in Tuskegee, Alabama. Lionel is an American R&B and soul singer who has won a Grammy Award and also an Academy Award for his songwriting, record producer, and occasional acting. He has sold over 50 million records. Lionel first became known when he sang for the Commodores in the 1970's. The Commodores were a popular Motown band. Their hits were, Easy, Three Times A Lady, and Brick House. Lionel left the Commodores in 1981 to begin a solo career. As a student in Tuskegee, he formed several R&B bands in the mid 1960's before joining the Commodores. In 1983, Lionel released, Canít Slow Down, which won him 2 Grammy Awards one of which was Album of the year. It also put him in the ranks as number one international superstars. From the album came the hit single, All night Long. He also worked with Michael Jackson on the song, We Are the World, by USA for Africa. Lionel has just recently come back together with Michael to co-write the song for Michaelís new album, Instinct, which is to be released in 2007. The song he co-wrote was The Whole World Over. And considers it very special because he says it is a ď real heart wrencher like back in the dayĒ.

Lionel married his college sweetheart, Brenda Harvey on October 18, 1975, but he had a relationship with Diane Alexander in 1986. He and his wife also unofficially adopted a two year old daughter of some people who were associated with the band. They raised Nicole as their own. During their separation in 1988, Brenda was arrested for spousal abuse, trespassing, and vandalism, but was never prosecuted. In 1990 the couple went through the formal legalities of adoption for Nicole, and in 1093 the couple divorced. Lionel and his lover had a son in 1994 and Lionel married Diane in 1995. They also had a daughter in 1998. Lionel and Diane divorced in 2004.

Richie was very popular in the Arab states such as Morocco, Dubai, Qatar, and Libya. His albums that have been recorded are, Lionel Richie (1982), Canít Slow down (1985), Dancing On the Ceiling (1986), Back To Front (1992), Louder Than Words (1996), Truly: The Love Songs (1997, Time (1998), Renaissance (2000), Encore (2002), Just For You (2004), and Coming Home (2006). The singles he has released over the years are, Endless Love (1981), Truly (1982), All Night Long (1983), Hello (1984), and Say You, Say me (1985). Lionel has made his mark in the music world and many people will remember him. He is one of many music artists that touched the hearts of many people (especially teens of that era) in the 1970's and 1980's. And his fame may not be over yet.
