Martikawas born as Marta Marrero, and was born on May 18, 1969. Martika is an American pop singer and also an actress. She was born in Whittier, California. One of her frist acting roles was the part of one of the little orphan girls in the movie, Annie, in 1982. She later was cast as, Gloria, in the Disney Channel Kids show, Kids Incorporated. This show was about a group of kids who gained fame by singing in the staged productions in the local malt shop. Martika as well as some of the other kids from the show also starred in the musical numbers from the motivational video, Be Somebody, by Mr. T. It was also known as Be Somebody’s Fool!. This show aired in 1984. After Martika’s role in these shows, CBS Records grabbed her and signed her to a contract. They saw her as a Madonna - like pop star. She released her first album in 1988, and it was called, Martika. From the album came the single hits, Toy Soldiers (number 1 in the U. S. Top 40 Singles chart), More Than You Know ( number 18 on the charts), and I Feel the Earth Move (number 25 on the charts). Martika released her first solo single called, WE ARE MUSIC, which was recorded to help promote Sony cassette tapes in Japan. Martika wrote and recorded the song, Blue Eyes Are Sensitive To the Light, which was written for the movie, Arachnophobia, in 1990. The producers of the movie did not like her vocals on the song so they had Sara Hickman sing the song for the film. The song was also re-recorded by several other singers later on. In 1991 Martika became one of Prince’s Protegees. Her second album was called, Martika’s Kitchen and it was a big hit abroad. The single from it called, Love _ Thy Will Be Done, was her second and last U. S. Top 10 single. The hits from the album which were successful overseas were, Coloured Kisses, and Temptation.
Martika played the role of a singer/ undercover cop, in the television show, Wiseguy, but the role was only temporary and did not last long. Martika was not seen again until in 1997 her album, The Best of Martika: More Than You Know, was released, and sold over 500,000 copies internationally. In 2000, she tried to regain popularity by singing backup for several projects but failed to gain recognition again. She built her own website in 2001, and released a remix of her new self recorded song, The Journey. This was also a flop so she shut down the site. In 2003 she joined with her husband, Michael Mozart, and formed a band called, Oppera. She changed her music style to goth pop. Oppera is now working on their third album release.
