Nick Lowewas born as Nicholas Drain Lowe on March 24, 1949, in Walton-on- Thames. He is an English singer, songwriter, bass guitar player, and producer. He makes his present home in Brentford, London, England. Nick began his career in 1966 when he became a member of Kippington Lodge, which was founded along with his friend, Brinsley Schwartz. They released a few singles on Parlophone. Three years passed and the band changed it’s name to Brinsley Schwartz. They began to play country and blues rock music. One of Nick’s best known songs is, What’s So Funny ‘Bout’ Peace, Love, and Understanding. The song was a big hit for Elvis Costello in 1979. The song, Cruel To Be Kind, became a big hit solo for Nick later on after the band rejected it. Nick Lowe left the Brinsley Schwartz band in the mid 1970's, and began playing in the group called, Rockpile, with Dave Edmunds. In 1976, he released the his first single with Stiff records label and called it, So It Goes, b/w/ Heart Of the City. The labels first EP was Nick’s four track called, Bowi. Nick continued to record and write songs. Elvis Costello released many albums which were written by Nick Lowe. Some of them were, My Aim Is True, This Year’s Model, and Armed Forces. Nick left Stiff records and went to Radar and F-Beat labels. There were two main writers for Rockpile, and they both had contracts with different record labels so the credits went to either Nick Lowe or Edmunds. The demise of the band was cause by the disagreements between the managers.
Some of Nick’s other songs he wrote were, I Knew the Bride When She Used to Rock ‘n’ Roll, When I Write the Book, I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass, All Men Are Liars, and Cruel To Be Kind. Cruel To Be Kind was co-written by Ian Gomm and it was Nick’s only U. S. Top 40 Hit and it reached number 12 on the Billboard charts in 1979.
Lowe married country singer, Carlene Carter, daughter of Carl Smith and June Carter, also country music singers. Carlene was the step daughter of Johnny Cash and Johnny adopted her daughter, Tiffany Anastasia Lowe. Nick and Johnny Cash also recorded songs together.Nick’s first son was born in 2005, and they named him, Roy Lowe.
Nick had another band called, Noise To Go and later had a band called, The Cowboy Outfit. Nick toured after Rockpile split up. Nick’s four most recent albums include American roots music including, country, soul, and R&B, to create his own style of music. Nick has released a total of 13 singles, 20 albums, 1 compilations, and 1 EP.
