Pink Floyd

is a group that was well known for their psychedelic rock music and later for their progressive rock music. They were also noted for their elaborate live shows. They are considered to be one of rock musicís most successful acts on stage. They have sold over 200 million albums worldwide and over 73 1ě2 million albums just in the United States. In the 1960's the band had moderate success. Syd Barrett was the leader of the band. He was eventually replaced because of his erratic behavior because of hard drug use. They replaced him with David Gilmour who was a singer and a guitar player. Singer and bass player became the leader of the group after Barret was removed. Barret got so bad that many times he would just stare into space at a concert or just strum one chord on the guitar or try to tune his guitar while the group was performing. It got to be such an ordeal, the others had to replace him.

Pink Floyd began their band as Sigma 6 then changed their name to The Meggadeaths, , then changed again to The Architectural Abdabs, then The Screaming Abdabs, then The Abdabs. The group split up and some of them formed a group called the Tea Set. At this time, the group experimented with a variety of drugs. They found out that another group was also called The Tea Set, so they changed their name yet again and this time it was The Pink Floyd Sound and later just Pink Floyd. and it stuck this time. They got their first national tv appearance on Top of the Pops in 1967. Piper At the Gates Of Dawn was the groups first debut album and it is now considered to be one of the best debut albums of all time. It was a good example of British psychedelic music.

As the band became more popular, the psychedelic drugs were taking their toll on Barrett. He was replaced in1968. Barrett died in 2006 in his home after 35 years of seclusion in Cambridge. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. The manager of the group, Steve OíRourke, died in 2003. Three members of the band, Gilmour, Mason, and Wright came together at the funeral and performed, Fat Old Sun, and The Great Gig in the Sky, at the Chichester Cathedral as a tribute to him.

Two years later, Pink Floyd again came together for a one-time performance at the London Live 8 Concert. The group is very well known worldwide and they will live on in the minds of many fans.
