was born as Prince Rogers Nelson, on June 7, 1958, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is an American fink musician and has been very popular with his music since the early 1980's. Prince comes from a musically inclined family. His father was a pianist and his mother was a singer. He is named after his dadís jazz band, Prince Rogers Trio. His music has varied from R&B, funk, and soul, as well as jazz, pop, rock, New Wave, and hip hop. Prince has released many songs using his own name and also through other artists. He is a producer, composer, performer, he arranges and performs almost all of the songs on his albums.

Prince got his first guitar from his father. He moved in with a neighborhood family after he and his father had a falling out. He became friends with their son, Andreí. Together they, along with Princeís cousin, Charles Smith, formed the band called, Grand Central, which they formed while in junior high school. When they were in high school they changed the name of their band to Champagne and started playing original music. In 1976 Prince began working on a demo tape with producer, Chris Moon. Moon introduced him to Owen Husney and he aided in recording a quality demo. Owen then contacted major record labels and ran a campaign promoting Prince. That was just the beginning of his successful career. He was often recognized by the clothes he wore on stage. He wore high heeled shoes and boots. He thought he looked good in them. He was booed off of the stage once when he appeared on stage wearing bikini briefs, leg warmers, high heeled boots, and a trench coat. He had garbage thrown at him and had to leave the stage. This happened in 1981 at the Rolling Stoneís two shows at the Los Angeles Coliseum. Prince was doing the opening act for the Rolling Stones.

In 1981, Prince formed a side project band which was called The Time. The Time released 4 albums between 1981 and 1990. Prince wrote, and performed all of the instruments and backing vocals on all of the albums.

Princeís album called Purple Rain, which was written in conjunction with the movie, Purple Rain, sold over 13 million copies in the United States and stayed at the top of the Billboard 200 for 24 weeks. The film grossed over 80 million dollars in the United States.
