The Romantics

The Romantics

is an American rock band which was formed in Detroit, Michigan. They chose their name, Romantics, because they formed the band on Valentineís Day, in 1977. The group became moderately popular in the 1980's, in the United States, Europe, Australia, Europe, Latin America, and parts of Asia. They released energetic songs and music videos. They were influenced by the British Invasion Rock of the 1960's, such as, The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who, The Hollies, and the Rolling Stones. They play a pop punk style of music which was known as power pop. They are also put into the category of the New Wave style of music.

The members of the Romantics were, Wally Palmer (vocalist, guitar and Harmonica player), Mike Skill (lead guitar player), Rich Cole (bass player), and Jimmy Marinos (drummer and vocalist). All four members were songwriters and contributed to their songs. After the group played in Detroit and the Midwest for a few years, they recorded a self titled debut album with the Nemporer Records label, in 1980. From the album came the hit, What I Like About You. The song reached number 48 on the U. S. Charts. After the group released their 2nd album called, National Breakout, in 1981, Mike Skill left the group and was replaced by Coz Canler. The band recorded, Strictly Personal, in 1982, and after that Rich Cole left the band and was replaced with by Mike Skill, who returned to be back with the group. The group gained their most success in 1983 and 1984 with the release of the album, In Heat. From the album came their first single, Talking In Your Sleep, which went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and was an international hit in many other countries. One In A Million was another hit single from the album. The group toured internationally and their music videos were aired on MTV and they also appeared on American Bandstand, Solid Gold, and Soul Train.

In the 1980's the group discovered that their managers were cheating them out of their profits. They also had a hit song that was used in a commercial without their permission. They filed a lawsuit against the management but it also prevented them from releasing any more material until the mid 1990's.

The bandís popularity began to gain ground again in the 1990's after they were successful in their lawsuit. They released the album, Made In Detroit. They also released other albums in the 1990's. The group has released a total of 8 albums and 6 singles during their career so far. They may or may not release more in the future.
