Timbuk 3

was a band which was formed in 1984 and was also called, Timbuk3. The band was formed by a husband and wife team, Pat and Barbara K. MacDonald. Pat played acoustic, electric, bass, and MIDI guitars, as well as the harmonica and drum programming. He was also a vocalist. Barbara played the electric guitar, mandolin, violin, rhythm programming, and she was also a vocalist. The two began playing for the first time in Madison, Wisconsin. They performed live with a large boombox in the beginning. The duo appeared on MTV’s, The Cutting Edge, in 1986 and shortly after that they signed up with I. R. S. Records label. They released their first album a little later and called it, Greetings From Timbuk 3. From the album came their only single to hit the charts and it was called, The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta’ Wear Shades. The song has been used in many movies and television shows since it was released, and it has also been included on many compilation CDs. Another one of their songs from the album was called, Shame On You, and it was used in the beginning of the movie called, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, which was released in 1987. In the film, D. O. A., in 1988, the duo appeared on the screen as the house band in a bar.

After the release of their debut album, the duo faded from the spotlight but continued to release albums. They released 6 more albums. In 1991, Wally Ingram and Courtney Audain joined the band. The group split up in 1995 and the members went on to pursue solo careers. Pat MacDonald moved to Barcelona, Spain and recorded several other albums under the Ulftone record label which was a German indie label. The albums were, Sleeps With His Guitar, Begging Her Graces, Degrees of Gone, In the Red Room, and Strange Love: PM Does DM. None of his albums were released in the United States. In 2007, he released the album called, Troubadour of Stomp, on the Broken Halo record label. This one was his first U. S. Release since 1997.

Barbara MacDonald has also released two albums which were called, Ready, and Undercover. These albums were a set of acoustic covers of the Timbuk 3 songs. Today she is working as a part of the Austin label for independent music called, Sparrow’s Wheel. She is also working with a new group called, Ghosts and Sparrows.

Timbuk 3 released 1 single, The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta’ Wear Shades, hit number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the U. K. Singles Chart as number 21. The duo released 7 albums total.
