Claim to Fame: She shot up the charts with her 1982 song -- and soon-to-be cheerleading favorite -- "Mickey."
Where are they now?
These days, Basil, a longtime dancer and choreographer, helps shape the dance moves we see in movies and on TV.
With her pigtails bouncing and her wide-eyed kewpie doll look, Basil made the perfect rockin' cheerleader in her hit 1982 "Mickey" video. Its irresistible hook -- "Hey, Mickey, you're so fine, you're so fine, you blow my mind, hey, Mickey!" -- helped propel it to the top of the Billboard charts by December 1982.
Unfortunately, that was Basil's one shining moment as a pop star -- her following singles flopped. But she's still kicking -- literally. Since graduating from Las Vegas Senior High School, Basil (real name: Antonia Basilotta) has worked steadily as a dancer and choreographer, as well as an occasional actress.
An in-demand choreographer, she worked on films including Legally Blonde, That Thing You Do and My Best Friend's Wedding, and with artists such as Bette Midler, David Bowie and the teen girl group 3 of Hearts. Single, and still youthful-looking at 58, she lives in Los Angeles. "I have an inspired career other than just singing," she told Entertainment Weekly in 1996.
And, of course, "Mickey" will never die. In fact, it can be heard in the One-Hit Wonders exhibit of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. The Irish pop quartet B*Witched's remake of the song was on the soundtrack to the 2000 Kirsten Dunst cheerleading flick "Bring It On." "People think, 'Well, she's not around because she's not in front of the camera,' " she told Entertainment Weekly. "You're not going to be that naive, are you?"
